Bamboo Nation Confuses Gays

Bamboo Nation Confuses Gays High School Musical 3 is going to hit the big screen October 24, 2008 – the only problem is that they haven’t started filming yet and there is already ‘talks’ about a High School Musical 4 popping up, according to Bamboo Nation. We’re a little confused about him though… Fag-curious?

The self proclaimed ‘PRINCESS GOMOLVILAS’, when not chugging down boba drinks, loves to make fun use of the word “gay”. I love calling myself my man’s bitch every now and then, but isn’t this a little too far?

The Princess has been causing roars of controversy on some recent articles of his like, “How Gay Is High School Musical?” and “High School Musical 2: Chock Full of Gay.”

As fun as it may be to think of Zac Efron ‘chock full of gay’ I had to say this guy is an idiot. Smart, but an idiot.

The blogger is already taking bids from blogs and news site to guest post an article titled “High School Musical 3: Gay Gay Gay Gay Gaaaaaaaaaay,” which he says “will surely rank up there with the rest of his controversial piece.

At first glance this guy may seem anti-gay, but then I started reading deeper into his post. He states to all his ‘Tweens’ to not get pissy at his post and adds “I love High School Musical as much as you do! I have the Zac Efron calendar to prove it!”

Hmm… I really don’ t know what else to say – Gay much?

This post was confusing. First off, it’s Prince, you know, like the Artist formerly known as Prince. Secondly, you do realize that he is, indeed, gay, right? Couldn’t tell from the muddle. I’m assuming that you don’t have a problem with that considering the ads on this blog. So I’m wondering, what exactly is your problem with Prince and HSM?

  • I could tell he’s gay from the shirt he’s wearing on his site… my only offense against him is how he uses the word “gay” as something negative. If any of our writers here were to use “f@g” or anything else that can be seen as negative we get our heads torn off. :)

You have to be a longtime fan and regular reader of Bamboo Nation, like me, to know that Prince uses the term ‘gay’ as a compliment, the way women have been reclaiming the word ‘bitch’ as a term of empowerment. He understands more than most how using the word ‘gay’ as an epithet can be damaging, and as an artist and writer he is working to redefine the meaning of ‘gay.’
He truly is a fan of the HSM movies. He is not an idiot, he’s a genius! Anyone who can spark so many heated reactions by writing about tween entertainment is no idiot. I could only hope to get so many responses and reactions to anything I’ve written . . .

  • I too am confused by this post. Prince is a well know writer/humorist who is unabashedly and unashamedly gay. I have been reading his blog for a long time and have never gotten the impression that he uses the word “gay” negatively. He likes HSM and he thinks it’s gay ….gay being good.
Why can’t a member of a subculture gently poke fun at their own groups foibles without “getting our heads torn off”? As a member of a non mainstream American subculture myself I find this phenomenon very curious. The humor site The Peoples News which is written by black folk constantly gets accused of being anti-black…. People, it’s called satire.

  • I’m confused as well. How exactly does Prince ever use the word “gay” with a negative connotation. If you read through his first two articles, he never uses the word with any negativity. The point of the articles is not to put down HSM, but to point out homosexual undertones that perhaps some people have missed. Could you give an example to back up your opinion?

  • Thanks for the comment guys and girls.

We’ll definitely keep that in mind. You can’t expect us to keep up with all the gay bloggers. :) And remember, I did say he was “smart”.

    @ Lucy B.
We live in this ‘great’ place called the United States of America and when we see the word gay used so many times (without knowing the authors background) and because of the way we were raised in fear we could only assume it was used negatively. Like Pete said… “you have to be a longtime fan and regular reader of Bamboo Nation” to understand the author.

As for your inquiry on “”Why can’t a member of a subculture gently poke fun at their own groups foibles without “getting our heads torn off”?” Well everyone has a different perspective of things… I can’t call a huge person fat because frankly some of them doesn’t like being called fat.

    @ Maggie
How about “High School Musical 3: Gay Gay Gay Gay Gaaaaaaaaaay”? Any random person who follows pop culture and media trends can safely assume that was bashful.

  • I think you missed the point of my comment, the operative words being “their own group” . My point being- fat people can ( and often do),refer to themselves and their friends as “fat”.If you are not fat best not to call someone fat. Same holds true for the dreaded “N” word. When used by Black people…no problem. When used by whites or other ethnic groups…not acceptable. So Prince uses “gay”, and “f@g” with impunity because that is his group. Whether this is “right” or ‘wrong” is fodder for another discussion. Personally I leave it up to the individuals of each subculture to decide.

  • [...] “Shame on you! Gay Asian Shame!” is a very deliberate and hateful phrase here kids. Seriously, he’s a hard working guy, with a good relationship, a full-time University student, a full time web-designer, and still has enough time in the day to create the kick-ass site you see here. If you don’t understand what’s going on check out the start of the series here. [...]

  • Ok… So you’re saying that excuses his stupid and ill-thought-out article? Prince has actually worked his ass off to get where he is. Seriously, Trey didn’t even know Prince was gay, and decided to take offense. Um, Trey, those articles were written for Queersighted – The AOL gay op-ed blog. This is a basic and lazy flaw in journalism, and Trey deserves to be laughed at. Trey missed the point of the piece by a mile, and instead thought it was Prince using “gay” as a derogatory term. Congrats Trey, you rank up there in research abilities and common sense with all the tween girls attacking Prince for being so cruel to their beloved show. Cheers.

  • Wow!!! Trey, I see you’ve met some of Prince’s fans lol. What did you get yourself into? Anywhos, for all the Prince’s fans, stop attacking my friend. He admitted that he didn’t know that Prince was gay. He’s not a fan of Prince (maybe now he is) and should be pardoned for his mistake. I read the article myself without knowing anything about Prince and I think the article could be ambivalent for those who aren’t familiar with Prince. But we all know now that neither Trey nor Prince meant any harm.

    Thanks,

This is to clarify things for all the hate mail I’ve been getting. You pussies shut up!
    1. I don’t know who Prince is, nor do I bother to waste my time and breath wanting to find out.
    2. The article that one of my authors wrote may have been uncalled for, but hey… if the powerpoint template fits.

  • It’s a shame that you think it’d be a waste of time to bother finding out who Prince Gomolvilas is. You could learn something from him. To be blunt, he’s a better, more sophisticated writer than you or any of your quote authors end-quote. Your site seems to be nothing but an inferior version of Towleroad. Apparently, you don’t know how to write about anything except underwear models and easy political topics. (By the way, if Prince did write only about those topics, then he would somehow make them fresh and hilarious.) Okay, that might be too harsh. But at the very least, you Trey C. are a lousy critic at this point in your life. The problem is that you demonstrated a lack of sophistication by completely misconstruing Prince’s political subtext, and instead of humbly apologizing like a nice guy, you continue to insult him. That’s why his fans are lashing out at you.
